RO vs. Carbon Filtration

Summary

Ice Machine Water Treatment Decision Flowchart

Use this to determine the minimum compliant filtration needed to protect ice quality, machine life, inspections, and manufacturer warranty.

STEP 1 — Has your water been tested?
Do you know your water hardness (gpg or ppm)?
Provisional rule: If unknown, treat as Moderate–High risk until verified.
Q1
Hardness known?
YES
NO
STOP
Action: Perform a strip test or request lab analysis.
Reason: Filtration can’t be properly sized without baseline data.
STEP 2 — What is your water hardness?
0–3 gpg (Soft) → Step 3A
4–7 gpg (Moderate) → Step 3B
8–14 gpg (Hard) → Step 3C
15+ gpg (Very Hard) → Step 3D
STEP 3A — Soft Water (0–3 gpg)
Mission-critical facility?
Hospital/VA/LTC, Corrections, mission-critical ops
YES → Carbon + Scale Inhibitor
NO → Standard Carbon
STEP 3B — Moderate Water (4–7 gpg)
Nugget/flake ice or healthcare?
YES → Carbon + Scale Inhibitor (High capacity)
NO → Carbon + Scale Inhibitor (Standard)
STEP 3C — Hard Water (8–14 gpg)
Is your ice machine:
Over 750 lbs/day, in healthcare, or a high-failure/high-service-cost environment?
YES → RO with blending (strongly recommended)
NO → Heavy-duty scale-reducing filtration
STEP 3D — Very Hard Water (15+ gpg)
RO with blending required.
  • Carbon alone will not protect the evaporator
  • Scale inhibitors alone are insufficient
  • Warranty risk is very high without RO
STEP 4 — Check water source (overrides some rules)
Is your water source well water?
YES → Treat as Hard–Very Hard until verified (iron, sulfur, TDS spikes common). RO frequently required.
NO → Follow the hardness-based path above.
STEP 5 — Check ice type (risk multiplier)
If you selected Nugget/Chewable or Flake ice:
Upgrade one level higher in filtration protection. These ice types are more sensitive to scale and biofilm.

FINAL OUTPUT

If Your Result Is… Recommendation
Soft + Standard ✅ Carbon Filtration
Moderate ✅ Carbon + Scale Inhibitor
Hard ✅ Heavy-Duty Scale Reduction OR RO
Very Hard ✅ RO + Blending Required
Healthcare + Any Risk ✅ Upgrade Filtration Level
Well Water ✅ Treat as High Risk Until Proven Otherwise
Nugget / Flake Ice ✅ Upgrade One Protection Level

WARRANTY PROTECTION RULE

Failure caused by scale or water quality is almost never covered by manufacturer warranty.

Filtration is not optional — it is a warranty requirement.
